Abstract:

The two biggest infrastructure blunders early B2B entrepreneurs make are that they don't have a CRM system in place and rely on spreadsheets, email chains and memory to manage customer information, or that they try an enterprise-level system with too many bells and whistles for small teams and drop it within a few weeks. The two are both failures of a kind: lack of a sound basis for establishing the definition of the revenue infrastructure actually needed in the early days of a venture. To enable scalable growth, this paper introduces a concept of the minimum viable CRM architecture, called Revenue Skeleton, which consists of five structural components; essential for every B2B founder before they can grow their business. The Revenue Skeleton is an overview of the basic components of revenue operations: lead capture, pipeline staging, contact intelligence, workflow automation and conversion measurement. Similar to a biological skeleton, it is not what the business looks like on the outside but what it looks like on the inside and without it, the business would not work smoothly. The paper proposes a prescriptive architecture based on the lean startup theory, implementation research of CRM, digital transformation literature and sales pipeline analytics. This framework is geared towards startups that have proven some initial interest in their product, but aren't operating the systems needed to turn those interests into repeatable and quantifiable revenue. In this context, CRM is not just a technology purchase, it's a strategic asset that can either launch a series of positive effects for long-term growth or feedback into inefficiency and failure.
